I am not a blogger.

I find it supremely uncomfortable to be writing to an audience who might or might not be there. It would be strange to write something only I myself will read and feel rather ridiculous especially if I intended it for some kind of audience in particular. Well, I'm going to take a risk to my pride and blog this, telling myself that it is a monologue of sorts, since I do talk to myself in my head all the time :)

I thought I'd put some photos up from a cafe near where I live called greens. They have the loveliest white chocolate rasperry cheesecake I've ever had! I'm not a cheesecake person and if given the choice wouldn't have cheesecake compared to any other cake but this was really surprisingly good! not like cheesecake at all!

Oh another thing, I am a ranty person, so maybe a blog is a good ranty kind of space. I would like to say that it absolutely annoys me reading some people's blogs that try to sound completely personal but are in fact attempting to advertise something (an event, place, product, or one's own skills like writing, drawing etc). yes my blog is to showcase my work. I have no pretenses about that.. I kind of started it because I needed to have a blog to submit work to illustration Friday. There you have it. this was started out of purely commercial/business reasons. I am not trying to be personal. haha I know I am contradicting myself especially after posting this personal post about myself... well I just felt that I didn't really like my blog cos it didn't have a personality and felt rather cold, it is about me after all!

Anyway that whole bit above was mainly to say that I am not advertising green's cafe or white chocolate raspberry cheesecake.

I feel like saying something about style and illustrators and the terrible war we have within ourselves (or at least myself) about this... but this post is already long so I'm going to stop :) It will have to come in the next post.

Keep drawing!

I love this pepper sugar salt set!! I think they are like a family with different personalities but all get along anyway with the occasional squabble.

Wander: Checkers
"She met an interesting creature, who compelled her to sit down,
first and foremmost, for a game quite like checkers,
which she found very amusing."

Wander: Summer Berry
"They ended in a draw, even though each tried their hardest to
best their opponent. To express his gratitude for so
stimulating a game, Mr Fuzzle presented her with one of his
favourite summer berries from his winter larder. "

Wander: Goodbye
"As the leaves began to fall, she decided she must go.
A boat ride across the river later, she turns to say
goodbye to her playful little friend."

Wander: Checkers

‎"She met an interesting creature, who compelled her to sit down,

This is a collage/diorama I've done for the small works
competitionat the Brunswick Street Gallery.
This is the first in a series of 3 works.

I've always loved having a sort of 3d effect to my work,
so that it wouldn't be just a 2d image. For this competition,
the requirementwas that it had to be max 30 x 30 x 30 cm in
dimensions  and it poseda serious challenge to me.
I didn't want to do something  tiny just so I could frame it within
the specifications, so I thought of creating the frame itself as
part of the artwork to maximize the size.

Going to get them photographed properly when I'm done!

Exhibition Photos

Exhibition Photos!

Ok, So my exhibition was over almost
2 months ago and I hadn't posted any news about it.. Sorry!
Here are the photos as you can see, taken by my friend Nick (Thanks nick!)
It was a great exhibition, lots of people turned up, and I even
managed to sell all of my work!
Which is really amazing and surprising to me...

I'm working on some new pieces which I am
going to enterinto the small works competition at the
Brunswick Street Gallery..
more about that in the next post.

Exhibition Work

Wander

Currently working on a series of works for my exhibition
which will be happeningcoming March!
The group exhibition is titled
'The End is the Beginning' because our group
has recently graduated and the end of our academic life
is only the beginning of a new and daunting adventure
into our creative lives.

My personal body of work I have chosen to title Wander.

This is the main character of my work..
I'm not sure what I'm going to call her yet..
I did a very loose sketch of a little girl with soulful eyes one
day when I was feeling depressed and confused about
what I wasgoing to do.. which happens quite alot apparently. haha.

This lost girl represents me.
Alot of us experience this at a certain time
in our lives (most especially artists I think).
Confusion over which direction to take, what road to follow,
what we are supposed to do with our lives.

The essence of my work is to be like a children's story.
My little lost girl wanders the world, discovering new and strange
places and characters. She carries a large handkerchief sack on her
back in which she carries all the things of the past with her,
her memories, experiences, regrets, and burdens.
She has yet to learn how to let go.

This pieces talks about the fear of failure, the end of the road,
looking down, and unexpected things that may
arise out of situations like this.
As you can see I haven't thought of any titles yet..
all the titles I come up with just seem to end up sounding cheesy...
Is it just me or doesanyone else have this problem too??

Here she has an encounter with a colourful seasnake.
I'm going to be doing 2 more underwater pieces kind of
like a story of her underwater experience.
This piece looks a lot better in real life...
scanners just never seem to capture white properly..
the little bits of white ink I've done for the highlights have all
disappeared together with the bubbles..
